8/29/2010 The following is a ship-wide text briefing:
Happy Birthday to the following people this week: September 1 - U.S.S. Kelly Commissioning Anniversary =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= U.S.S. Kelly September Activity: Date: September 18, 2010 If you plan to attend the U.S.S. Kelly 24th Commissioning Celebration (i.e. the ship's birthday party) in a few weeks, please let Crewman Aaron Stevens know a.s.a.p. The White Buffalo (the Kelly's group in Tooele) requires a count of attendees so that they can provide the appropriate amount of food. Please contact Aaron Stevens at whitebuffalo@usskelly.com to either RSVP or to volunteer. There will be a minimal cost of $3 per person to cover the cost of the meal.
=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= Upcoming Kelly Activity - November: Although October’s activity is still in the planning stages, we now have an official activity planned for November. We are going to provide the makings of a Thanksgiving dinner to a deserving family, and also have a game night. When: November 20, 2010 The idea behind this activity is to provide help for a family in need. The activity itself will also be a game night, and will be the collection point for all the food we will be gathering. Details will be provided as they are known. If you have an idea on a family in need or know of ways we can receive food donations, please contact your Senior Officer or Jill Bogler.
=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= New Orders for the Kelly! By order of Admiral Hollinger, the USS Kelly is to proceed to Space Station K-12 for a well deserved session of R&R. En route, the USS Kelly will pick up a distinguished guest, coordinates to be entered after departure from current location. CMO, please have your staff on call for any medical emergencies that may occur. While at K-12, we will rendezvous with the USS Hastings. Keep in mind, that due to the proximity of Space Station K-12 to one of the borders of the Romulan Neutral Zone, the Fleet will maintain a Yellow Alert status. This means that only 1/3 of all personnel may be on the station at a time, so coordinate you duty shifts as appropriate. Congratulations for a job well done, y’all. Captain David Thalmann, =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= It's Communique time again! The deadline to have your articles and stories in for the next issue of the Communique is this coming Wednesday, September 1st. Please submit your ideas to the editors at communique@usskelly.com as soon as possible.

=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= Rank Promotions and those "Scary Trivia Tests"... As you may (or may not) be aware, when you decide to become an officer on the U.S.S. Kelly you need to take what is known as an Academy Assessment. While this trivia "test" may look scary (after all, it IS 300 questions long), there are some things you need to know. We also take other large trivia tests, those required for the command ranks (Lt. Commander and higher). These Command Tests have recently changed, and can be done in sections. You can start to take these as soon as you reach Lieutenant, and if you score high enough you will never have to take another test as long as you are in the club. One other thing... Our original Training Sheet system (on which the Merit Sheet system is based) was designed to help you prepare for these command tests. By the time you take the command test, you should already know the answers to several of the questions because you have seen them before. Cool, huh? =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= Message from Admiral Hollinger: The Bridge Officer’s Test has been divided into 5 sections … one for each Television series (TOS & TAS & Star Trek 11; TNG; DS9; VOY; ENT with movies 1 – 6). Segments can be taken as soon as you make the rank of full Lieutenant. All five segment scores will be added together for the total score. If you make 90% you don’t have to take any tests for Commander rank. If you make 70% you pass the test at the Lt. Commander level. By the way, doing Merit Sheets helps you study for this test. This is another great reason to attend our monthly Merit Sheet nights at Seven Port!
=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= Merit Sheet Nights Where: Seven Port (6615 South 700 West in Murray, a.k.a. the Roesberry's home.) Please R.S.V.P. to Lt. Roesberry at (801)897-9005 to confirm that you are planning to attend so he can get a head-count of how many to expect.
=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= Supporting the Admiral when called upon We have been given a directive from Admiral Hollinger. Since the Admiral’s Flag is on the Kelly (meaning that he leads the fleet from there), and since the Admiral has very little direct staff, members of the Kelly are warned that they should expect to be used as Admiralty Staff from time to time.
=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= Delta Squad: For those who work late at night, there is a new group starting up called the "Delta Squad". This is an Away Team group for those who work the night shift, and will be run by Lt. Robert Aswin. The purpose of this away team group is to allow members of the ship that work a night job and are unable to participate in a ship's activities to find a niche and able to be an active member of the club. Several things that can occur at this meetings can be from briefings that have been discussed at meetings, help with merit sheets for rank advancement, discussion of lessons learned from media sources and above all else allow a member to be part of the ship's family, even though they are on a different living schedule. Please contact Lt. Robert Aswin for more information.

Be Willing to Donate Some Metal (coins) for Your Medals! At the most recent Fleet meeting, the collective captains of the fleet made a policy change you need to be aware of: Going forward, crewmembers who earn a medal of some kind are *strongly* encouraged to also help defray the cost of their medal by reimbursing the ship for the cost of the award. This is also true if you'd like to order a copy of a medal you previously received to go on a second uniform or replace one that has been lost. Captain Thalmann would like the U.S.S. Kelly to lead the way in embracing this opportunity and supporting the Fleet.

UPCOMING CONVENTIONS Trek Expo: Oct. 15 - 17, Hollywood, CA StarFest (April 2011) If enough people are interested, Captain Stark is thinking of chartering a bus to take us all to Starfest. This will only happen if enough people are willing to sign up and go to make the cost reasonable, and the cost will vary depending on how many folks sign up. The estimated cost is between $80-100 per person, round trip.
For comparison, Greyhound charges $130.00 round trip to make the same journey. If we get our own bus, we are on our own schedule and can set times for when we leave Salt Lake and when we leave Denver (and how often we stop for snacks!). The Celebration Life Monument is a tribute and memorial to Utah individuals, both living and deceased, who have donated an organ. The monument is in the heart of Salt Lake City on the southeast corner of Library Square at 500 South and 300 East. This year's ceremony will be particularly poignant to anyone who had the honor and privelege to know George Bogler, as his name is among those that will be honored as it is added to the list of other heroes whose names are already there. Anyone who wishes to join other members of the Kelly who will be attending the event are most welcome and encouraged to do so. Here's the info you'll need:. Commander Rhonda Hollinger, the fleet coordinator. (No matter how you pay for your shirt, however, it is a good idea to order online so we can get a good count.) UPCOMING CONVENTIONS Fandemonium: Aug. 6 - 8, Nampa, ID. Starfest (April 2011)
If enough people are interested, Captain Stark is thinking of chartering a bus to take us all to Starfest.
