Your Solar System Needs YOU!

Do you fancy helping scientists save the planet, or at least its communications and power systems, from the comfort of your own computer? A new project helps you do just that, even if you don’t have any specialist knowledge.

Solar Stormwatch is an appeal by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London for public volunteers to look through images from satellites orbiting the Sun to spot solar storms. Those are gigantic releases of material from the Sun’s magnetic field which can disrupt communications satellites. In some cases they can even damage cellphone networks or power lines.

You can read more at Geeks Are Sexy.

Captain Thalmann has challenged the U.S.S. Kelly to go to Starfest in Denver in 2011. Since that is slightly over a year away, we have plenty of time to save up and prepare to go.

Starfest is a huge convention, and is always fun to attend. Many friends of the Seventh Fleet live in and around Denver, and half the fun of attending is being with friends (new and old).

Starfest counts as an out-of-state convention for the Commander rank advancement, and will also count toward the Prantares Medal achievement. (Oh, and out-of-state conventions are also worth 30 Participation merit points.)

Check out http://www.starland.com for more info about Starfest.

=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(=

As part of the preparation for Denver 2011, and just because it's cool, Captain Thalmann has encouraged all members to get a uniform. To that end, senior officers will need to work with their departments to get uniforms made. There are several sewers in the Seventh Fleet who may be willing to help. Also, some people may have a uniform that is in good condition but doesn't fit. Senior officers should be made aware of any uniforms for sale.

Owning a uniform is worth 15 - 30 Participation merit points, and is also a requirement for the rank of Commander.

=[(= =[(= =[(= =[(= =[(=

Communique submissions are due TOMORROW! Thank you very much to the departments/people who have submitted their articles on time. For those who are expected to submit an article... if you are late, then expect a phone call soon.

Individual submissions are also welcome for any Communique.

Please send all submissions to Lt. Cmdr. Jill Bogler at communications@usskelly.com, or contact her to make other arrangements.

Lots of changes are in store for the U.S.S. Kelly NCC-73400-A. A new captain means a new attitude and a new direction for the club. Captain Thalmann announced that he wants the Kelly to become a leadership training club. This will mean lots of changes to the way we do things. Some of those changes include:

Every active department will have both a Chief and an Assistant Chief ... there will be no more one person departments. Each department chief will pick their own assistant.

Each chief and assistant chief will work on rank advancements. This will help encourage others in the club to work on their ranks as well.

Real life situations will now count toward promotional merit points (points for rank advancements). This does two things. First, it makes it easier to earn rank advancements. Secondly, it means that we can apply the leadership lesson we learn on the Kelly to real life situations. Additionally, it will help train up club leaders.

Star Trek light-up shirt

For the Star Trek fan who is looking for a shirt to catch the eye, the latest offering by ThinkGeek will fit the bill perfectly.

The fully licensed Star Trek illuminated shirt features the Star Trek logo and the Enterprise on the front of the shirt. A small battery pack (four AAA batteries are required) that is stored in an inside pocket near the hem of the shirt powers the cycling animation mode, and there are several different modes from which to choose.

For laundering, the battery pack is removable, and then the shirt can be cleaned, hand wash only. The Star Trek Illuminated shirt is on sale for only $14.99. The shirt normally sells for $39.99.
